I’m currently doing a 100daysofrunning challenge. I’ve divided it into 10 phases, each consisting of 10 days. In each phase, I’ll focus on one thing which will help me become a better runner. I focussed on stride rate in the first phase and body posture in the second phase. Now I’m in the third phase and I’ve decided to focus on relaxation.
Running has completely changed my life and I love it the most. I’m glad that I can relax while doing the activity that I love the most. The idea of relaxation made me fall in love with it. Now the question comes:
How to Relax Your Body While Running
The idea of relaxation came to my mind while I was reading one amazing book on running. Here I want to quote some lines from that book (Born to Run)-
But yeah, Ann [Trason] insisted, running was romantic; and no, of course her friends didn’t get it because they’d never broken through. For them, running was a miserable two miles motivated solely by size 6 jeans: get on the scale, get depressed, get your headphones on, and get it over with. But you can’t muscle through a five-hour run that way; you have to relax into it, like easing your body into a hot bath, until it no longer resists the shock and begins to enjoy it.
So to incorporate relaxation into my running, I started focussing on each part of my body at every kilometer. If I observe a little pain in any area- for the next 100m, I just try to relax it. This way on every kilometer mark I have my form check as well as stress check.
One more thing- once I started engaging my lower abdominal muscles to avoid the pelvic tilt (in the second phase) I started feeling less stress on my hands and legs. I didn’t try hard to move ahead, it just started happening. I’m very happy and blessed to know this.
In first three days, I didn’t felt any difference because I ran only 2-3 km. But later, when I ran long distances it had quite a significance. On the last day of the third phase, I was able to complete my first barefoot half marathon of 2017. Even after running a half marathon I was not feeling tired.
Yes yes yes… I was running at a slower pace but still, there was no sign of pain or stress on any part of my body. But this is a great sign that these phases are working in favor of me and my running.
Summary of the Third Phase
I ran a total of 81.3 km in the total time of 7 hours 19 minutes 17 seconds with an average speed of 11.10 km/hr and took total 77782 steps averaging 177.1 strides/minute.
This is the longest streak in my running history. Even after continuously running for 30 days, I feel fresh and strong. Yeah, the third phase was best but I’m excited about fourth phase and what is lying ahead.
